Nikon D800 Test #2: Low Light (part 1)

50mm 1/60 sec f/1.8 ISO 100

This week my wife & I decided to spend the 4th of July in New York City. It was a great trip, and opportunity to test the new camera. I wanted to make this first low light test just about the dynamic range of the camera. I had heard that the Nikon D800 had the ability to capture a ridiculous range of information, so it was fun seeing how pictures (that I would have normally tossed in the trash) turned out to be totally usable. The picture above was taken from the back seat of our taxi at 4 am while traveling to the airport. Processed, it turned out like this…

Here’s another shot from Korean Town. This was done with no tripod, I imagine it would have been way better had I been prepared for a real shoot, not just goofing around on the streets waiting for our table at the restaurant.

50mm 1/15 sec f/2 ISO 100

Here’s the processed one…

Processed

Results: Awesome!

Next test: Low light, High ISO & Noise
